Everything you use on your hair from your hair sprays to spritzes to gel and mousses coat your hair to create hold and volume. However, over time these styling products can build up on your hair, weighing your hair down and making it look dull. Detecting product build up
To determine if you have buildup on your scalp and your hair shafts, start looking for a flaky, itchy or dry scalp. Your hair has product build up if it feels heavy, greasy and tends to clump easily.
Removing product build up
- Scalp exfoliation: Like your skin, your scalp also needs exfoliation to remove dead skin cells, impurities and product build-up. Give your hair some love with a scalp treatment that will nourish your roots and reduce oil production. Mix 2 tablespoons of coconut oil with three tablespoons of sugar. You can also add a few drops of lavender oil to the mixture and massage gently onto your scalp in circular motions. Leave the mixture for at least 15 minutes and then wash with a mild clarifying shampoo.
- Apple cider vinegar clarifying cleanse: At the end of the week, you can try the three-minute apple cider vinegar cleanse. Apple cider vinegar can restore your hair to its normal pH level and act as a clarifying agent to break down product accumulation. Apple cider vinegar will also seal the cuticle to lock in moisture in the hair. - Baking soda cleanse: Baking soda is a natural cleanser and clarifier. Just make a paste by adding one tablespoon of baking soda to 1/4th cup warm water. Wash your hair with lukewarm water and, use a comb to spread the mixture onto your wet hair. Let the mixture sit for five minutes and rinse it out with a clarifying shampoo.
